Sword of Justice,
A medieval graphic novel,
by David Haziot et François Baranger

Brittany, Middle Ages, 13th century. A cruel injustice strikes a peaceful home. Orliade sees her father condemned to hang for a fire he did not commit. Desperate, she vows revenge at any cost. Thus begins a chain of events unleashed by this original crime, where no one truly masters their fate.

Who are the bastard lords of Haute-Roche, whose power rivals their brutality? Who is Tancrède, the young man thrust by chance into the role of avenger? And what of Ogier de Brettgen, haunted by his past?

Love, war, tournaments, peasant uprisings, magic, and defiance of the powers of darkness… Sword of Justice is a chivalric romance in the purest medieval tradition, where the ideals of honor, courage, and courtly love still echo through time.

Experience the breathtaking depth of traditional French BD. No digital shortcuts: every tournament, castle, and shadow is entirely hand-drawn and painted in gouache by François Baranger.

Meet the Authors

David Haziot: Writer and Biographer

David Haziot is an acclaimed French author of novels, essays, and biographies. Passionate about art, history, and grand narratives, he infuses his writings with a signature depth, rigor, and gripping intensity.

His outstanding literary career has been honored with several major awards. Notably, he received the prestigious Prix Goncourt de la Biographie for Le Roman des Rouart and a distinction from the Académie Française for his biography of Van Gogh, which has since been translated into multiple languages.

Moving between genres, he is also the author of Elles, an original feminist novel exploring the end of matriarchy during the Neolithic era.

Today, David brings that exact same narrative power and historical depth to his compelling scripts for graphic novels.

François Baranger: Illustrator & Painter

Trained in fine arts and ceramic arts, François Baranger is a passionate painter and illustrator whose style blends influences from the Italian Quattrocento to symbolism and surrealism. In the world of French graphic novels, his realistic, elegant, and powerful lines reject any digital artifice to let the raw emotion of the image speak.

Sword of Justice marks his third collaboration with writer David Haziot, following L'Or du Temps (exploring Pharaonic Egypt) and L'Insoumise (unfolding during the Italian Renaissance).

His absolute commitment to historical accuracy ensures that every setting and costume is perfectly authentic. A master craftsman and model maker, François even builds his own sheet-metal armor, and his workshop houses an impressive medieval castle model complete with its own cathedral. A true dreamer fascinated by the Middle Ages, his deep passion is the driving force behind the breathtaking pages of Sword of Justice.
